Available SPARQL repositories

- Where are some available SPARQL repositories to test against my code?
- Are there any repositories with public APIs that I could reuse on my domain application?
- I want this kind of data. Where can I find it?

Some questions people frequently ask me, and obviously dbpedia is mostly the most common answer. But dbpedia SPARQL repository is just for testing stuff and not actually developing your app on top of that.
 I will set up an API that will contain all the available SPARQL endpoints I have found and have some interesting data to play with and also the last time I interacted with that and was alive or not.
An interesting entry on the area of SPARQL repositories are open data portals and some open governmental ones.
For example the Engage Data portal is a nice example of how open data can be linked and available for developers and/or citizens. Simply put, ENGAGE is a door for researchers that leads them to the world of Open Government Data. By using this platform, researchers and citizens will be able to submit, acquire, search and visualize diverse, distributed and derived Public sector datasets from all the countries of the European Union. It also has an accompanied sparql endpoint. Of course there is still a lot of space for improvement, but still is a nice approach.

But before I go into detail onto describing about my API and stuff, let me briefly explain what SPARQL is and why is so important.

What is SPARQL?


As google says:

  1. SPARQL is the standardized query language for RDF, the same way SQL is the standardized query language for relational databases. If this is the first time you look at SPARQL, but you're familiar with SQL, you will see some similarities because it shares several keywords such as SELECT , WHERE , etc.
One really nice reference to read more and deeper about SPARQL, its capabilities and some basic queries can be found on semanticweb.com. Of course the latest specification is always a MUST read for everyone.


List of Repositories

The list is available at the moment in a github repo of mine but soon will be through the API as promised.
Feel free to fork it, comment on it and update it in general.
I will keep my effort alive to create a reference for that.
